My wife and I visited the Courtland Town Center location of Homegoods in Mohegan Lake today specifically to buy a table for our living room, so we can present a responsible and finished household to our parents who are visiting this weekend. After several disappointing sticker shocks, we uncovered a somewhat damaged unit that we deemed perfect for our needs. I asked the Manager Joy Lynn to reduce the price in light of the damage. She agreed, but only by half of the amount I requested.

In order to curry her cooperation and make it easier on all of us, my wife and I continued shopping and selected another 5+ items to make the purchase more substantial. The same Manager, Joy Lynn, was conferring with another Manager, Jackie, at that point. So I approached them both and explained my circumstances:

I had just been laid off, and my parents visit this weekend makes the table crucial for us to be able to present our home to them as we hope to. I showed both managers my dismissal email on my phone, and appealed to them for just another $15 off - what had by then become a wide range of many products - so we could keep the this key purchase within our dwindling budget.

Despite being intimidated by these two Managers in tandem, and notwithstanding my open-hearted and utterly forthright appeal, these Managers elected to interrupt me, ignore my explanation completely, and disregard my needs, feelings and budget altogether.

One irony was the holiday seasonal decorations - as their behavior couldnโ€™t have been further from a holiday spirit. Moreover, I normally wouldnโ€™t care about $15 but to buy this damaged item anyway deserves a commensurate compromise. The fact that these two Managers were so lacking in compassion, customer service and basic business sense, is sufficient to turn me - and my wife, who is a designer by trade and used to recommend pieces from Homegoods to her client - off indefinitelyโ€ฆ.unless of course a remedy is soon forthcoming, which would shock me.

Reason of review: Pricing issue.

Monetary Loss: $15.

Preferred solution: Credit my card used for this purchase by the $15+ overcharge (or more for the insult).

HomeGoods Pros: Cute items that we found and bought for our home.

HomeGoods Cons: Terrible managers and their horrifyingly inhumane attitude.

So. First off.

That item is supposed to look โ€œdistressedโ€. Youโ€™re literally asking for money off for damage that made a โ€œdistressedโ€ piece of furniture look more in-line with its intended fashion. Secondly, they offered you money off. It wasnโ€™t what you wanted but they couldโ€™ve offered nothing.

Thirdly, the reason the prices are below retail is because Homegoods is an off-price retailer. Meaning that there will be many items that wonโ€™t be perfect and thatโ€™s why the prices reflect this. How is it at all their responsibility to put up with your extenuating circumstances that affect your life?

They have budgets and sales metrics that they need to make regardless of you losing your job. This is an unnecessary complaint.

I feel like Iโ€™m in the Twilight Zone or something. Horrifyingly inhumane?

What was โ€œhorrifyingly inhumaneโ€ about their attitude? Based on what you described, I was able to gather that they interrupted you (which is rude and unprofessional), and you felt they didnโ€™t give you a substantial enough discount on a damaged item. But, based on the photos and information you provided, the damage consisted of some scratches or scrapes that could easily be touched up with some white paint. Also, itโ€™s not possible for us to know if your request was reasonable or not, since you didnโ€™t say how much of a discount you requested.

50%? 75%? 25%? Maybe your request was unreasonable given the level of severity of the damage and they can only offer what they are authorized to offer as a damaged item discount, regardless of their having Christmas decorations out already and regardless of your financial or personal problems that you felt were relevant and appropriate to share.

They have bosses to answer to as well and rules to follow regarding discounting items. Iโ€™m very sorry you lost your job and I hope you were able to get back on your feet quickly. Most of us have fallen on hard times (financial or otherwise) at some point in our lives, so most of us can relate. However itโ€™s during those times when we must really re-examine our needs vs.

wants. Food, shelter, clean clothes, medical care are all needs. A small accent table/end doesnโ€™t seem โ€œcrucialโ€ at all, no matter whoโ€™s coming to visit. Your parents were most likely coming to see you, not judge you based upon whether or not you have an acceptable accent table/end table .

If a tiny little scraped up end table/accent table represents your success in life and allows you to present your home the way you want to, I question your priorities, perhaps even your sanity. Also, this is just a thought, but if youโ€™re financially strapped, maybe you could have put back the extra five items you say you added just โ€œto make the purchase more substantial.โ€ If they interrupted you, thatโ€™s rude and unprofessional. We donโ€™t have any way to know if you were rude to them. Or belligerent or making unreasonable demands.

Or if you were perfectly polite and reasonable in your request. But they arenโ€™t obligated to give you a greater discount than they are authorized simply because you overshared your personal financial struggles with them. I personally fail to see, based on what you described, what was โ€œhorrifyingly inhumaneโ€ about their behavior.

It seems you may be a bit histrionic. Perhaps even a lunatic.
